20 Years in IT: How Technical Expertise Transforms Account Management

Meet Amy Nowakowski: The Account Manager Who Actually Knows Your IT Systems

A Career Built from the Ground Up

Most IT account managers learn technology from the outside in. Amy Nowakowski built her career from the inside out over two decades as a hands-on technician: earning certifications, supporting clients, and solving problems as they happened, before ever stepping into client management.

For nearly seven years, Amy Nowakowski worked as a Macintosh specialist at SUNY Fredonia, a role she landed before even graduating. It all started at BOCES, where a scholarship and associate’s degree opened the door, before she went on to complete her bachelor’s degree at SUNY Fredonia. As a Macintosh specialist she set up computer labs, earned Apple and JAMF certifications, and built the technical foundation that would shape the rest of her career.

She later stepped away from work to raise her children. When she returned to the field in 2019, she brought all that technical foundation with her. A former colleague in 2024 reached out about an opening at IT Insights of Rochester, and she took it. She joined as a technician, and moving into account management felt like the natural next step as a formal recognition of the client-first instincts, relationships, and trust she’d already earned with them over years of hands-on support.

“I enjoy working in an industry that rapidly evolves, challenges me to always be learning, and allows me to partner with others to help them solve problems and thrive in their roles,” she says. “Tech is a great fit for me.”

Time spent inside their systems, diagnosing problems, and explaining what caused them—meant her clients already knew her. They’d seen her work, watched her follow through, and come to rely on her judgment. She already has the confidence of her clients, which is exactly what makes her so effective in the role today.

From Tech Support to Trusted Advisor

The best account managers don’t just manage relationships. They solve problems before clients know to ask. That’s where Amy’s technical background gives her an edge. She recognizes patterns, spots early warning signs when systems start to drift, and sees connections between tickets that might look unrelated to someone without her depth of experience.

“I look at things through a different lens,” she says. “I’m not just managing the account. I’m thinking about system health, security posture, and whether their infrastructure is still aligned with where their business is going.”

Ask Amy what makes her effective, and she’ll tell you about knowing what’s behind the wall, what a recommendation takes to implement, what tends to go wrong, and how all the pieces fit together. That knowledge shapes everything: how she prioritizes competing needs, what trade-offs she recommends, and whether a situation calls for a workaround or a real solution.

It shows up in how she works, too. If a client’s system runs into trouble outside business hours, she stays on it, sending updates as things develop rather than making someone wait until morning. She knows what it feels like to need an answer, and she builds her whole approach around not making people wait for one. For her clients, that means fewer surprises, smarter spending, and a partner who’s thinking several steps ahead—not just responding to whatever issue came in today.

Her advice to anyone starting out in IT reflects the same balance. “Ask all the questions,” she says. “There are no dumb questions. I’d rather someone just starting out ask and see it firsthand, because sometimes you break more than you fix.” But she’s equally quick to point out that technical skill is only half of it. The other half is never losing sight of the client: helping people think through how technology can move their business forward, not just keep it running; putting security in place before something goes wrong; and remembering that there’s a person on the other end of every ticket who needs their issue resolved well and quickly. For Amy, that’s what separates a good technician from a good partner, and it’s the same instinct that makes her so well suited to managing accounts today.

Beyond the Office

Amy has never been particularly interested in blending in, the tattoos are just the first clue. Outside of the office, she’s a mom of four, a former professional baker, and an antique hunter with an eye for things that have a story. Her home reflects that same spirit: part cozy, part eclectic, filled with finds like an old wine barrel top, a glass gummy worm, or a tiny E.T. tucked somewhere unexpected. It’s the same energy she brings to her career in enterprise IT — she’s never been one to do things the expected way.

She loves baking, adventures, car shows, weekend getaways, and hunting down the kind of unusual finds most people would walk right past. With a personality that’s equal parts bubbly and outspoken, she brings the same energy to her life outside of work that she brings to her career: curious, independent, and always willing to try something new.

Community is important to her too. She has volunteered with organizations and programs supporting children, including the Ronald McDonald House, one reason IT Insights of Rochester’s commitment to giving back resonates with her. For Amy, being successful isn’t only about building a career. It’s about building a life: raising her kids, staying involved in her community, and having plenty of fun along the way.

Looking Ahead

The IT industry is changing, and so is what makes a great account manager. Amy’s journey from tech bench to client leadership isn’t just a career story, it’s a blueprint for the kind of expertise businesses increasingly need: someone who can translate technology into business outcomes because they’ve built, fixed, and secured the systems they’re now recommending.

As technology grows more complex and stakes grow higher, that combination of deep technical knowledge and genuine client partnership isn’t just valuable; it’s essential. And for the Rochester businesses Amy supports, it’s exactly what they’re getting.
